México, principios del siglo XIX. En una de sus cacerías, el rico español Everardo, dueño de la hacienda de los Rivera, ve aparecer de súbito un niño negro desnudo frente a una gran cascada. Everardo bautiza al niño negro Gaspar y lo regala a una de sus hijas, la niña Emma. Con el paso del tiempo se hacen adultos Gaspar, Emma y los hermanos de ella, Lucha y Sebastián. Everardo vuelve muy envejecido de un viaje a Europa con Elvira, su ardiente esposa. Emma y Gaspar son amantes. Sebastián, ansioso
