En este volumen se reúnen las conferencias magistrales que se dictaron en 1991 en el Museo del Carmen, organizadas por el Área del México Antiguo de la Dirección de Etnología y Antropología Social, del INAH. A través de las cuales se pretendía cambiar la percepción de lo que tradicionalmente entendemos por conferencia: la exposición de un tema por algún especialista, para un reducido número de participantes.
