Este son es pariente cercano de un son jarocho que se llama El conejo, ya que ambos tienen la misma secuencia armónica, incluso en éstos se pueden cantar ls mismas estrofas. Don Laco nos aclara que en sus tiempos de juventud, La liebre no se cantaba, sólo se tocaba para que la "viejada" pudiera andar de aquí para allá (como hacen las liebres) brincoteando entre las personas y entre los músicos.
