En la época colonial se explotaban metales como la plata y el oro. Otros, como el hierro, abundante en el occidente de la Nueva España, no resultaban tan atractivos ya que eran importados de España, específicamente de la región de Vizcaya; sólo cuando las guerras de España contra Francia o Inglaterra lo hacían escasear, se le extraía aquí con mayor intensidad.
