En este retrato, el santo viste el hábito de la Compañía de Jesús y sostiene en su mano izquierda un cráneo coronado, lo que se relaciona con el traslado y reconocimiento del cadáver de la emperatriz Isabel de Portugal. Este suceso fue decisivo en la vida del santo, pues lo llevó a afirmar: "Nunca volveré a servir a señora que se me pueda morir".
