De las tres obras con este tema consignadas en este catálogo, ésta tiene la particularidad de presentar a san Gabriel de pie, ante la Virgen, casi del mismo tamaño, a pesar de su diferente posición. La parquedad de motivos iconográficos en el cuadro hace pensar que el pintor se apegó a la descripción de este pasaje hecha por el evengelista san Lucas. La obra está integrada a la decoración de yesería dorada y pintada, de la capilla conocida como Relicario de San José.
