La anunciación
En este lienzo de Cristóbal de Villalpando se observa un magnífico ejemplo de la libertad creativa del barroco novohispano. El artista colocó a la Virgen María y al arcángel san Gabriel en un ámbito teatral, donde los espectadores son los nueve coros angélicos jerárquicamente organizados en torno a Dios: serafines, querubines, tronos, dominaciones, virtudes, potestades, principados, arcángeles y ángeles. En lugar de haber pintado la escena en un espacio cerrado y doméstico, el pintor lo plasmó en un ambiente celestial.
